What are the services?

Social care services in the community are provided to help you remain living independently in your own home.

These include home care and personal support (including night sitting services), Careline equipment and alarms, assistive technology, day care or day services, community meals (also known as meals on wheels) or any meals you may have at a day centre or luncheon club, or transport.

Please remember that this information is a general guide only and that in some circumstances different rules will apply.

Paying for services provided in the community

Will I have to pay?

This very much depends on your own personal financial circumstances. We will look at your finances with you and then we will work out how much you have to pay.

What are the charges?

From 2nd April 2012, the charges are as follows:

Fixed charges - Everyone has to pay these

  • Meals (at home or at a day centre) £3.85
  • Chilled evening meals £1.79

Other charges - You may be able to get help with these

  • Home care or personal support services: £13.05 an hour
  • Careline: £2.55 a week
  • Assistive Technology: monitoring and maintenance equipment: £3.80 per week and mobile response £1.93 per week
  • one session at a day centre: £30.00.

Can I get help with the cost?

Everyone has to pay the full cost of any meals but you may be able to get help with the other charges. We will visit you at home and help you fill out a financial assessment form to see if you qualify for a reduced charge.

How much will I pay for services?

We will take into account any income or benefits you receive, including disability benefits such as Attendance Allowance and the care component of Disability Living Allowance.  We then take off a set allowance for your daily living costs.  Allowances are also made for any housing costs and disability related expenses you have.  Income that is not counted includes wages or salary, the mobility component of Disability Living Allowance or the savings credit part of Pension Credit.

Any savings between £14,250 and £23,250 will be taken into account when we decide how much you will have to pay.  If you have savings over £23,250 you will pay the full charge for any care services you receive.

The document 'Paying for Long Term Care in England'(PDF file) (310kb) has been developed by a group of public organisations and charities to help people make better and more informed decisions about paying for care and to encourage people to get information and advice about the use of their money for this purpose.

Will I have to sell my house?

No, you will not have to sell the house you live in to pay for any services that you receive. However, if you own any other land or property, we will take the value of this into account.
