What is available?

There are a number of specialist day centres run by the Council or by local community or voluntary organisations. They are run by staff and volunteers who organise a full programme of activities to suit the people who go there, such as adult learning courses, life skills, health and social development, employment skills, community engagement and employment skills.

If needed, care and support is available to help ensure that people are able to participate in activities. Lunch and refreshments are provided and there is a chance to socialise with other people.

Who can go there?

These specialist day centres are open to people over 18 with a learning or physical disability, sight or hearing loss or an acquired brain injury.

We can offer you help and advice on what day centres are available to meet your needs but if you need support from Adult Social Care we will need to carry out an assessment.

What is an assessment?

After the assessment we will identify and agree your needs with you and discuss the support available to meet them, according to the seriousness of your situation.

How can I find out where they are?

Follow the link below for a list of some of day centres in the Wigan area.

How much does it cost?

There will be some cost but the actual amount you pay will depend on what services you receive.

Can I get help with the cost?

It is possible. We will help you fill out a financial assessment form to see if you qualify for financial help. To get a rough idea of costs you can call us and we'll work out a rough idea for you over the phone. To see what some of the fixed charges are and what sort of things are taken into account when working out your costs, have a look at the page:

Paying for Services provided in the Community

We may provide or arrange services for you but there are other ways of getting the support you need. You can choose to have a Personal Budget and use the money that you receive from us to arrange your own support.

What are Personal Budgets?

How can I get there?

We will encourage you to arrange your own transport. If you find it difficult to use public transport there are other ways of getting there. If you would like to find out more please click here.
